I completely lost my sense of smell following a bout of Covid in 2024 and it returned with a vengeance just before a trip to Rome in November 2025. Wandering around Rome, I was delighted to be able to be able to smell the delicious odours of freshly baked bread and pizza and to recognise the odours trailing in the wake of the many smokers & vapers.

The scent of market stalls selling fresh flowers, leather and street food was a complete joy and I was so thrilled to be able to smell again, I didn’t even mind the more pungent aromas!

This series of photographs is a tribute to the wonderfully fragrant streets of Rome and to the return of my sense of smell.
